Ladybird names

LADYBIRDS OF IRELAND

The table below lists some thirty ladybird species from the family Coccinellidae that have been reported over the years from Ireland. The names, both scientific and common, are taken from Roy and Brown (2018). These include both the “conspicuous” species, e.g. the 7-spot ladybird and some but not all of the “inconspicuous” ones, e.g. the Oak scymnus which may not be immediately recognised as a ladybirds. Some species on the list may be occasional migrants or vagrants or have been accidentally brought to Ireland. There are old single records for the Water and the ’12-spot’ ladybirds. The current knowledge of ladybird distributions is probably best described as “data deficient”.
